Burping is the act of expelling air from the stomach through the mouth and usually occurs when your stomach expands because of too much swallowed air. Burping releases the air to reduce the distention. Burping also known as belching or eructation.
What causes Burping?
Burping occurs when your stomach fills with swallowed air. Some of the reasons why more air than normal may be swallowed are:
• drinking carbonated drinks
• eating or drinking too quickly
For babies and young kid, they may swallow large amounts of air without realizing it. Babies can burp shortly just after drinking breast milk to expel the excess air that was swallowed during feeding.
These are some of the main causes of burping or belching:
Aerophagia is one of the leading cause of burping. When eating or drinking too quickly, people also can swallow a lot of air. Aerophagia can also occur when:
• talking and eating at the same time
• sucking on hard candies
• wearing poorly fitted dentures
• drinking through a straw
• breathing through your nose
• having an anxiety attack
• chewing gum

Foods high in sugar, starch or fiber can cause gas. Some other drinks such as alcohol and carbonated drinks also cause frequent burping.

Some different medications may lead to burping or to the disorders that cause burping. These may include:
• using pain medications, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin
• laxatives, such as lactulose and sorbitol
• a common type 2 diabetes medication called acarbose
Excess use of some pain medications may cause gastritis, which is a condition that can cause belching or burping.

A number of medical conditions may also cause belching as a symptom. Conditions that may cause burping (belching) include:
• gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a disorder that causes acid from the stomach to flow upward into the esophagus or food pipe
• lactose intolerance is an inability to properly digest lactose, an ingredient found in dairy products
• Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacteria that cause stomach infections, which can increase belching
• peptic ulcers: sores on the stomach, esophagus, and upper part of your small intestine
• gastritis: a disorder that causes inflammation of the stomach lining
• gastroparesis is a disorder in which the muscles in your stomach wall are weakened
• fructose or sorbitol malabsorption: inability to properly digest the carbohydrates fructose and sorbitol
How to stop burping?
1. Try to eat and drink more slowly. Because when you drink or eating too quickly, it can lead to gulping extra air along with the food and resulting burps. When you eat in relaxing place, less stress it will limit the amount of burping.
2. Chew your meals well with mouth closed and avoid talk during eat. Talking while eating will cause your mouth open and swallow air along with your food.
3. Drink water or tea and avoid carbonated beverages. Carbonated beverages contain carbon dioxide which can cause to burping.
4. Drink directly from a glass and avoid using straw or drinking from a can or bottle. Using straws only will take in more air along with the beverage.
5. Avoid sucking on hard candy, chewing gum, and smoking. All of these habits result in extra air being swallowed into your stomach and also avoid big yawning motions with your mouth or keep your mouth shut while yawning using your palm of your hand.
6. Try to change your diet with include fewer gas-producing foods. Avoid some foods that can produce gas during digestion such as baked beans, broccoli, lentils, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, onions, cabbage, lettuce, chocolate, and fruits such as apples, pears, and peaches. Also avoid foods that contain large amounts of air such as souffle, mousses, and whipped cream
7. If you burp a lot, it may cause heartburn. Heartburn is usually getting worse by eating certain foods and have bad eating habits. You can try to avoid eating in big portions, eat before bed, Avoid eating fatty foods. Avoid overly acidic foods, like tomatoes, onions, coffee, red wine, salad dressings, and fruit drinks. Also avoid spicy foods, such as chili, peppers, and other spices. To reduce of getting heartburn, you may want to avoid wearing tight clothes, stop smoking and obesity.
8. Some people with nervous habit tend to swallow excessive air when nervous.
9. Check the dentures. If you have poorly fitting dentures, it can result in swallowing air while we eat.
10. Always steam the vegetables instead of boiling. This will helps maintain their natural enzymes that aid in your digestion.
11. You can take an over-the-counter antacid containing simethicone. This medicine will help to break-up larger gas bubbles into smaller bubbles.
12. Avoid wearing tight clothing which can lead to abdominal discomfort and burping. Wear loose clothing will reduce the chance of getting burps.
13. Drink herbal tea after meals. Chamomile, mint, raspberry, fennel, and ginger may help reduce gas in your stomach.
14. If you suffer from chronic burping, then the best way to choose is to take a consult to a physician to rule out medical causes. Excessive belching followed by indigestion, heartburn, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or abdominal pain can be symptoms of medical problems such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux, gastritis, lactose intolerance or gluten intolerance, or gastroparesis and ulcers.
